What a pain in the ass. Move out was uneventful, but we got to the new place and of course the garage was too small to get the moving truck in. So we had to move everything through the outside of the garage, down two levels of the parking garage and into a pretty small elevator. These two gentlemen from Mexico were helping me move and I was helping wheel stuff down the garage, but they had to do two more moves yesterday after mine. This one dude was running shit down, it was fucking amazing, and I was obviously helping, but not at the same speed as those fellas. This poor dude was drenched in sweat and then had to go back outside to the truck in 10 degree weather. He looked miserable.
Last time I moved I had these ex con looking white trash types move (same company) and they jack moved me on supplies and crap and were generally really freaking slow, thus running the bill up to over $500. Dude gave me the bill yesterday and it was $340. I gave each of the dudes $100 cash tip and one of them almost started crying he was so happy. The driver then pulled the race card, saying "thank you so much, I have to move an Indian family next and we will be lucky if they give us a $20 tip between the two of us." I was like, "dude, you never know what people will give you, you can't just assume they won't give you a good tip." Fast forward, I noticed they left some blankets in our place so I left the dude a message. He called me back in a few hours and was like "keep the blankets man, not worth our time or gas to come get them, and oh by the way, the move we did after yours, they had a Lexus and a BMW and they didn't give us a tip. I told you man."
I just don't fucking get people. If you have two fucking luxury cars, give the fucking guys who are making $10 or $12 an hour something for their fucking back breaking labor. The rampant greed of the middle class is what must be making the liberal movement so strong, they have no problem dicking the working man over so they think that instead of just paying up when someone does them a solid they have to assuage their guilt through massive government programs.

Moving blows....plain and simple. I agree with the tipping as well. We moved into our current house the weekend of the Iowa-N Ill game in Chicago. The dudes busted their balls to get us in so I could head to Chicago in time to go to a Cubs game. I tipped them well. In regards to tipping, some people are just fucking cheap....and that might be why they can afford a Lexus. I don't think it has anything to do with liberal or conservative.

Sorry pal, if the difference between being able to scrape together payments to buy a Lexus is appropriately tipping very low compensated people for jobs in which it is customary to tip, then you can't afford a Lexus. You might be able to scrape the money together, but that doesn't mean you can afford it. I can scrape the money together to go buy a Lambo if I get really cheap on everything else, but I can't look at my wife and tell her we could afford it.

Oh yeah, I also want to point out how awesome it is to not hear a single siren, drunken prole screaming or garbage truck throughout the course of an evening. And this morning I heard bird's chirping when I went outside. Not too shabby.

BTR, glad to hear the move is done. Cleaning and unpacking is a hemorrhoid, but at least the loading/unloading is behind you and you didn't pop one of your oysters. I may start a thread on tipping one of these days. I totally agree with you about the soulless motherfuckers who don't tip labor and service workers. Christ, wifey and I tip like we've only got weeks to live, and we never think twice. If I listed the tips I gave to all the subs who worked on our 1st floor remodel in '09, y'all's eyes would pop. Not to mention the packers & movers on both sides of our move from RI to NC (a move for which we didn't pay, but still we tipped like drunken lobstermen). And the gal who delivers our mail, and the doggy day-care guy, and the mechanic who takes such good care of two of our cars, and.... TIP, ALL YOU CHEAP INSENSITIVE PHONEYS, TIP!!

Glad it went as smoothly as possible. BTW, I am pretty solidly left of center and I tip very well. I figure that you can tell a lot about a person's character by how they treat those in a lower station that their own. I knew when I was dating if the woman was rude to the wait staff, they were not for me.

I tip generously unless the service sucks. Even as a prole.
Because I'm not an asshole. Us proles take care of our own.

BTR- Curious how much you pay someone to watch your kid when you and the wife hit the town? What you pay someone to watch your kid is also a pretty good barometer of whether you are a cheap fuck. We pay $10 per hour for two kids and both of our sitters think they hit the lottery. What's the going rate in Chicago Land?

No kids yet. Ma's been having some um uh issues. She is quitting her job next month in the hopes they end and bince after taxes and shit she's netting less than a grand a month. Irregardless, the going rate in Chicago from folks I know seems to be $14 an hour, but my guess is that it is a lower in Evanston with all the college kids around.
Speaking of college kids, I went to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight bince Ma wanted some wings for supper, fucking A that place is plastered with NU shit from floor to ceiling. The Darnell Autry Rose Bowl jersey reminded me yet again of the fucking fact that NU has been to a Rose Bowl more recently than Iowa despite Ferentz's god damned 3 and 3/4 million fucking dollar contract. FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU.

BTR...good to hear that you got the move done and even better to hear that your not a cheap-ass, tight-wad son of a bitch.
We got a 50" flat screen TV a few years ago that came with what they called "white glove" service. Means, the guys brought it into the house, unboxed it, set it all up, hauled away all of the packing materials, etc. Pretty sweet arrangement.
Anyway, as luck would have it, it arrived at about 6pm on a snowy Christmas Eve. We were out in Schaumburg and the delivery guys were both from the city. Already working Christmas eve, and already after normal working hours would suck, but with the snow, I knew they wouldn't get home until 8pm or later.
I asked them to take our old TV upstairs (not included in the deal) which they did which was pretty cool. I slipped them each $50, wished them a Merry Christmas and they were on their way.
You gotta treat people with a little dignity and respect, and more so, appreciate what they do for you. Don't be a cheap-ass MF.

Train ride was nice this morning. Train came on time, I got a seat, I could actually read on it, no proles coughing directly into my face, ran express into Ogilve with one stop at Clyborn, pretty fucking boss.

Having used the services of illegals in one of my moves in California, I must say they were the hardest working guys around. Every time I went to pick up a box or move something on my own....they simply wouldn't let me......no, no, no, LP....we will get that. Juan and Chu-Chu......damn I wish Congress would have passed the DREAM ACT for their kids. I tipped them each a hundred and bought them In and Out for dinner (which they seemed more happy about than the money).

Through HS and College 1.0 I moved furniture for my dad's company... after which I've moved 20 times myself, and helped countless others.
It sucks balls.
When loading for Illinois from Cali, I paid 4 day laborers $25/hr cash to help me load... plus gave them some old electronics I never used. I've seen good and bad, and those guys earned it.
So are you in a home where manual labor is required to maintain it? If so, please post some pictures.

There ain't a lot of manual work necessary and Ma paid some contractor $15k to update the place and the neighbors from across the courtyard told me how good they thought our new kitchen looked. Note to self, close blinds.
