I can't remember the last time I was this unexcited to watch an Iowa Football game. It may be that I think we're going to get killed, or it just might be that after the disappointment of the year, I just don't care anymore and am ready to be done with it until next Sept.
So I want to look at the positions for next Sept:
QB: Conventional wisdom says Vandy. He can throw and his mom is hot. Can we scramble? Can he improvise? Can he create? We haven't seen that out of him. I am not ready to anoint him yet lik everyone else seems ready to do. I sense the second coming of Kyle McCann.
RB: If the coaches realize that they need a HR threat and Coker gets most of the carries, than I see him becoming our #1 workhorse next year and having a Shonn Greene type of year. If Robinson is your premier back, I think we've seen what he can do, but when a team wants to stop the run, ARob was a disaster. Coker on the other hand still moved the ball.
WR: McNutt is a great possession guy but has no real speed. Keenan is a possession guy but has no real speed. I'm looking at a lot of 15 yard crossing patterns which may play into Vandy's strengths as well.
TE: Between Herman and CJF I'm thinking this is fine
OL: Return a bunch this should be a much better unit.
If I were KOK: I would pound the ball down their fucking throats. I would use Coker, Johnson and Robinson as a three headed monster like a certain asshat in Madison did with a huge fatty, an average RB, and a true freshman. Ask Vandy to manage games and not win them, with short accurate passes. I don't see Iowa scoring a lot of points next year, but my hope is that we dominate time of possession, and have a huge success rate of converting drives into scores.
Offensive MVP: Coker
DL: Always seems to be fine. Daniels, Daniel, Alvis will probably be in there. We'll really need LB to step up especially early in the year.
LB: Is Morris actually the second coming or is he another in the long line of Iowa folk heroes that are actually only slightly above average players. He'll need to take a major step up next year to be the captain of the defense in a meaningful way. I am not sold on our LB's, they still concern me.
DB: Prater and Hyde are back and should both be much much improved. I think Sash comes back which means we only need to replace Greenwood who to me is a great example of a slightly above average player that got turned into a folk hero by the fanbase.
If I were Norm: You have a shut down corner and maybe a second and a strong safety that always seems to be in the right place at the right time. I cheat up on the LB to help with run support on a totally unproven line and ask the DB's to shut it down if they go deep.
Defensive MVP: M. Daniels
Schedule
You play some asshole and then Iowa State so you better start off 2-0. Pitt is an average at best program and there is no excuse to lose that game at home, followed by yet another asshole so they better start off 4-0.
From there things get interesting. The second third is @ Penn State, home again NW, home against IU and on the road at Minnesota. If you beat Penn State, there is NO EXCUSE to not be 8-0. But if we lose, do we suffer hangovers against three straight spread teams? Indiana frankly scares me. And we should have no confidence in ever beating NW. If you play the odds here though, we go 3-1 in this stretch and go into the final third 7-1/3-1
We finish with Michigan and Michigan State at home, and then Purdue and Nebraska on the road. We should sweep Michigan next year playing both at home, but I see a split. No excuse not to beat Purdue. This puts us at 9-2/5-2 going into Nebraska.
Win that game and we are playing in Indianapolis with a ten win season. Lose it and we are going to the Outback Bowl.
