I think it is a travesty that the season opened in Japan and, to me, that is not over-stating it. For years, the season opened in Cinncinnati on a Monday, as they were the first truly professional baseball team, then the rest of the majors got underway the next day. It was bad enough when this tradition fell by the wayside and they started opening it up on Sunday night (for ESPN) and it involved the World Series champs from the year before. OK, I can take this. But opening the season in Japan? That pisses me off. Am I alone in this or is it okay for our traditional game to open its season in another country?

I think that it is just Bud's way of getting in on the whole global branding of baseball (like the NFL did playing in London last year and the NBA starting their season in China) I think it looks good on paper but I don't think it does a lot for MLB since baseball is already huge in Japan.

I don't count it as Opening Day. I'm with Spank, even though the Braves and Nationals get started Sunday night on ESPN, the real opening day is Monday.

It only counts for BTR's wife. That's it. For the rest of us, you know when opening day is.

Opening day is the day you in very late March or early April when you roll into your local stadium, get an ice cold Budweiser (notwithstanding the weather or its union roots), and sit in a packed stadium with 30-50+ thousand other men (very few gals out on opening day) who are skipping work and have a helluva time. The shop I used to work in made the gals hold down the fort on OD and the dudes got a bus and rolled to Yankee Stadium for beer drinking and baseball.
Any idea of "tradition" in baseball is gone. Bud Selig and his cronies who sat by silently while 'roid monsters competed to hit the ball over an ever-closer outfield wall ruined the game as it used to be played. There is a shit ton of cash on the line in Japan as it prolly ranks second behind the US in terms of current market size for baseball fans. Guys like Matsui and Matsuzaka who roll to the US and can sway TV contracts in a country the size of Japan are huge boons to the owners, thus it makes sense why the owners would want to throw the Japanese fans a bone like this. Opening Day here will be just as grand, skipping work and sipping beer will still be done, just a few fans will have to deal with already being ahead or behind in the standings.
