WE ARE NOT A COACHING GRAVEYARD!!!! cyclonefanatic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=207958Is complete BS......and I'm growing tired of local media every 4-5 years writing stuff that other potential candidates read and it simply isn't true. This is not 1990. We are nearly 30 years removed from a program that was considered a "coaching graveyard". Let's just look at some facts surrounding being a HC of football at Iowa State right now, not 30 years ago, right now... Ames, Iowa: 1- Great family town as recognized by many national publications as the perfect place to raise a family. 2- virtually zero violent crime rate. 3- very good school systems academically. 4- cheap as hell to live in compared with many other states and cities. 5- Weather is pretty darn good 8-9 months out of the year. Sit back and enjoy a white Christmas. 6- Traffic is basically non existent and town is easy to get around in. Iowa State Football: 1- Now has 21st century facilities and is at the very least on par with many P5 programs. 2- A fan base which is fiercely loyal and will put at least 50,000 fans in the stadium no matter what is happening. If it's good u will see 61,500 every game. There are many FBS P5 programs with much greater success and history who don't come close to this...This is a far cry from a Graveyard. 3- Many football coaches have left ISU and gone on to have successful careers elsewhere. Jay Norvell, Tom Herman, Chizik, Steve Loney, Chris Ash, Tony Alford. I'm sure I'm missing others, these were off the top of my head. A coaching graveyard doesn't allow you to leave this cesspool of a graveyard program to move on to coach at Auburn and win a NC and this is after 2 years of horrible losing football at Iowa State. Coaching Graveyards don't allow this to happen. 4- An Athletic Dept, Atheltic Director, University, and fan base that will give you 6-7 years to right the ship and be successful. No other P5 program will allow this..none. 5- If you are successful as the HC at ISU you will be idolized and supported like a God, which will allow you as a HC to have a very long lucrative contract or move on to a power house program, either of which is great for you as the HC. I'm not aiming this at CW. ISU being a coaching graveyard gets tossed around by every outlet in the state and some outside the state and it's simply not true today. Perception is reality and it needs to stop. How could he forget about the quality of water there?!? Also, Chizik's career didn't go very far after Cam Newton left.

The cost of living argument always makes me laffy also. I'm sure Mrs hoiberg spends hours worrying about the fact a pound of ground beef costs seven bucks at jewel and was only five in Hy Vee. They also ignore the fact that housing costs are totally irrelevant cause unless your places resale value gets destroyed by a poorly ventilated smokehouse restaurant you typically get back your housing investment when you sell.

Pretty much all of those arguments only work when you are trying to convince someone who just had a kid to leave a $60k job in Chicago for a $48k job in Ames. But they don't work on anyone who (a) is single or (b) makes enough money that taxes are their biggest annual expense.

Didn't read the thread, but how many clown fans listed proximity to Des Moines as a big factor in why Ames is attractive to coaches?

From the same graveyard thread- LOLZ on so many levels. 1. Walden didn't get a fair shot? He coached there for 8 fucking years. 2. Minny is a bigger graveyard? Aside from having an actual history in football that includes multiple national championships, conference championships, and a heisman winner oh and being relevant (to some extent) in their conference in the last 20 years not to mention Minneapolis vs. Ames. 3. Decent funds? You are aware that Pollard financed a large portion of the SEZ correct? ?? 4. Had a huge hole to climb out of? I think you me have. 5. Bringing up Hayden Fry? A guy that hasn't coached at Iowa since 1998? That's the topper of this fucking moron's post.

They've both had some other disastrous hires, it's just that their ADs are smart enough to see when a guy like Charlie Weis or Tim Brewster just ain't gonna cut it and they pull the fucking plug ASAP rather than saying "Golly, he sure is a swell guy so let's keep him around and let the program fester for another two or three years before we do anything about it just to ensure we are getting worse recruits than half of the MAC teams."
