I'll admit, I jumped on the Drake bandwagon (wife is alumni), and would've liked to see Davis stay. But, does this sound familiar from the Providence prospective? Young MVC coach with one year of large success hired into a major conference...

Seems to me like providence is reaching. Keno has one year of coaching experience, and that with a team built by his father. Maybe it is a package deal with Dr. Tom as well. That said, congrats to Keno. Way to capitalize on your success this year and sell yourself high.

I just lost quite a bit of respect for Keno. Who the heck is Providence? We all expected him to leave eventually but I think it was assumed he would go to more 'sexy' school than providence and for much more money than $1 mil.

Sexy or not, Providence is a Big East school...Drake is MVC. It's a bigger conference, with more possibilities than Drake.
If I'm the AD at Providence, I'd have waited another year or two before offering Keno the job as we don't know if this was a one year wonder at Drake or what.
And the team at Drake this past year WAS Keno's. He'd been handling recruiting and the like for a while.

In related news, KXNO radio's Larry Cotlar had to be pulled off the ledge of a bridge over I-235 today...
The man-crush that Larry had for Keno is impressive/disturbing.

The reason I see him doing this is because what if he only wins 16 to 19 games next year or the year after? He has to take this opportunity now because it may not come up again.

I agree Keno was smart to make the move, I can't say the same for Providence. I see 3 or 4 seasons right around .500 and Keno looking for a new job after the 2011 or 2012 season.

This is like Iowa when they went after Alf. Keno will be back at a mid-major if he fails, but on the other hand Providence is setting him up financially (like Iowa did with Alf) so if he does fail, taking a pay cut to go back to mid-major level won't be as hard to do. Then again maybe he is like Alf and will think a paycut to go to a non BCS school would be a promotion if he does indeed fail. I really hope he can succeed there though.

That move is like Keno selling when the NASDAQ hit 5000. It is pure genius. Congrats to Keno. Drake will have a good year again in 2040 or so.

Definitely a surprising move from a Providence standpoint. Way to go Keno....collect the $$$$ while you can. Guess the Relays are the hot ticket again for the next 40 years.

Any guesses on the new coach? I've heard Bruce Weber is on the short list and by "short list" I mean "list of guys I wish would take the job so they'd get TF out of Illinois."

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Drake will never be more than a stepping-stone or "last stop" school. Not to preach, but c'mon, big-time college sports (with a certain very few exeptions (Duke)) is pretty unforgiving and is 100% a business. If he fails at Drake, Drake cans him. Schools only have loyalty if you're winning. But even that isn't enough it seems....Iowa canned a coach for not winning "enough." Take the dough, invest it wisely, pad your resume and go for it. Opportunities like this only come along once in a great while. Good move Keno.
