This is going to sound kinda fishy....but....
I want to get an aquarium. Always wanted one and now have the room for one.
I don't know squat about them. I do want fresh water marine life however.
I see 12 gallon rounded models run about $150, with a stand at $75.
With that said, anybody have any advice? I'm truly a novice.

Make sure there is water in it. Without salt. Yeah...good call wood......I found out first hand that fish, for some reason unknown to me, do not like Ritz crackers or chicken marinated in teriyaki sauce.

Hmmmm...I obviously didn't clarify my request for you Waste-lander knuckleheads...
Does anybody have any valuable and pertinent advice for a first-time aquarium buyer?
;D

I would say that making sure there is non-salted water in the tank is "valuable and pertinent" advice for starting a fresh-water aquarium.

My advice: buy used. They are a hell of a lot cheaper. And there is always somebody selling a used aquarium.
My other advice is to go catch a little walleye, bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish... something like that and stick it in there. Then throw some minnows in for food.
Otherwise, if you wanted to buy your fish.. I suggest cichlids. They are much more interesting than your average 'community' freshwater fish. They are agressive and can only live with other agressive species, but it's fun to watch them chase each other around all day.

Don't just run TAP water into the tank. The chlorine will kill them. Yeah, I figure you knew this, but you never know.

My advice...
1. Don't add wild fish to your tank. Wild fish carry diseases that can kill everything else in your tank.
2. Don't buy an octopus or eel or anything exotic like that. Octopuses can get out of any tank and eels will eat any other fish you have.
3. Go to a local pet shop run by an old hippie who knows everything about tanks. Don't buy from Meijer or PetSmart or any of those places staffed by the local high school kids.
4. Make sure you test fill the tank outside before filling it up in your apartment in case it leaks.

All I know about aquariums is what I learned from watching Finding Nemo about 200 times.
The AquaScum 2003 is an all-purpose, self-cleaning maintenance free salt water purifier that is guaranteed to even extend the life of your aquarium fish'... As the AquaScum is programmed to scan your tank environment every 5 minutes.
...But the fish seem to hate it.
