To sum up this game, it's actually not that different from the first game, right down to the score. Hox win 87-56. The defense pretty much dominated the game, with NDSU shooting under 30%, which prompted plenty of run and gun from Iowa. Still pretty much impossible to tell what they'll look liek against a decent team, bince they have such a physical advantage over these shitty teams, that they are NEVER forced into those choppy half-court sets that BoneG teams forced on them last year, which caused their free fall.
Anthony Clemmons again looked great. He shot 3-4 from 3, and if he becomes a reliable shooter, this offense may be worth something, because he's a good perimeter defender, and it keeps Peter Jok off the floor. Jok again showed the brains that lead him to drink and scooter twice, by amassing 5 points, 4 turnovers, and 4 fouls in just 20 minutes. I've been saying for months that this guy is someone who, if we need to rely on, bodes terribly for this team. Maybe he'll put it together next year, but he'll be out of the rotation by BoneG season.
After last game, I said Olesani should be starting. Despite the fact that Woodberry looked good with 10 points and 11 boards on 5-6 shooting in 21 minutes, Olesani looked better, with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with a couple of blocks.
This team, for some reason, seems to play our of control for no reason. They had more turnovers and fouls than NDSU. Granted, they dominated because the defense was smothering, but again, when they play a decent team, will that haunt them. A team with an athletic advantage, like Texas, can punish you for those turnovers. The bench, which was a strength last year, looks to be a weakness this year. Outside of seniors Olesani and Oglesby, we don't have a guy who's a real player. Uhl will get there as he develops, but not this season, Jok is a disaster, like I said, and Dickerson, the JC PG, just runs really, really fast and has no idea what to do. Ordinarily I would say that can be fixed with coaching, but running really fast with no idea what to do IS Fran's offense, if 4 years of observation is to be believed, so I have my worries that he will not be a consistent contributor either.

Very well stated. No wonder you get teh big bucks at firm. Jok IS a disaster at this point and I don't see that ever improving. Some high school "stars" who were allowed to freelance on the floor and put up big numbers night after night can never adapt their game to the college level, and Jok increasingly looks like one of those. I hope our starters are never in enough foul trouble or injured that he gets much PT. We'll be in trouble if he does; would not object at all if he decided to transfer. Clemmons appears to have a new focus and to have worked on his shots in the off-season; a solid performer. For a tall guy, Uthoff has a sweet touch from outside. Hope he can continue that in the BoneG. Woodberry will be Woodberry, serviceable but still sort of slow defending, likely will find himself in foul trouble and riding a lot of pine against better players. Olesani really impressed. He will be a big factor in how far this team goes this year. We are going to miss him next year. Texas will be an interesting game Thursday night. Should be a good one between evenly matched teams. However, I would not be surprised if we see a Baylor-like 20-point loss from the NIT two years ago. I'm not ready to write Jok off forever. Fran must believe he has a future if he gives him so many minutes early in the season. He never gave Pat Ingrahm a chance like he's giving Jok, which is even more surprising in light of his legal troubles. Of course, Fran has shown a Kurt-like tendency to be loyal to players who suck (McCabe). Woodberry will be Woodberry is a good description. He will be decent, but not consistent. Certainly not a guy you can lean on, which, as a 4* center in his junior year, makes him officially a disappointment. On the plus side, if Clemmons and Johnny Utah are giving us a preview of what to come, they should be able to make up for the loss of Marble's offense. Both of them are hitting legit shots from three and jump shooting well, which will free the lane for White. I was not particularly happy White was playing as a distributor instead of a scorer last night (he only had 2 shots in the first half), but winning by 30 with him not shooting, even against a shitty team, is a good sign. Honestly, the offense is miles ahead of where I thought it would be. If the defense is legit, instead of a just a bi-product of the competition so far, this team can be a for-real top 20 team. My only hope is that Fran keeps the bench really short. A solid 7 man rotation with Oferthree and Olesani/Woodberry getting 20 minutes a game, with Dickerson and Uhl getting 5-10, we'll be good. If he runs the bench like last year, and is playing Jok and Uhl 10+ minutes, we're in trouble.
