Do you have full priced memberships? You could get one of those.

Imma call the electric company and "direct tv" them about getting a lower price, because I'm poor and I can't afford full price Satellite TV or Golf Memberships.

I'm gathering info for le wife to go and convince her that it's going to be well worth it to switch to solar and get a system. Gotta be smart and have EVERYTHING laid out or she'll just nix it immediately.

Despite your pro solar article Seff, even if all that solar does come on line on the next two years, it will still only be a drop on the bucket when compared to the total electrical generation capacity. Solar generation currently accounts for .4% of current capacity. Let's say solar capacity doubles each year for the next five years (which it won't), that still only leaves us at 6.4% by 2020. Looking much beyond that, does not make much sense as tech could totally change by then.

I'm by no means a "what's new on the solar front" expert, but there a few general areas of intense research: Solar cells (only about 15% efficient now) Batteries (way behind solar technology....makes it difficult to store energy and 'get off the grid') New ways to use solar (roadside heating, incorporation into automobiles) The following articles sum up what's going on. You can google any number of these articles. Yeah, I stole a bit for my opening monologue but you get the point. www.altenergy.org/renewables/solar/latest-solar-technology.htmlwww.extremetech.com/tag/solar-powerThe bottom line is the solar industry/application is in its infancy. I don't see a simple addition of use...I see a very sharp linear explosion in about 10 years.

My 'state of the art' solar panels will be tomorrow's solar betamax in probably 20 years. 15% capture rate will be laughed at. It'll probably generate a lot of interest as the 'way things used to be.'
Either my panels will be 85% more efficient and generate a ton of juice for their size, or, the cells will shrink, allowing a 5kW system like mine (5000 watts per year generated) to be the size of one panel perhaps.
But I don't care. I'm an early adapter...excited to get onboard.
What'll be in 20 years?.....there will be solar shingles, solar glass, solar this, solar that...all incorporated into housing construction. The Prius uses solar panels to run the A/C for example so the engine doesn't have to, saving gas. Hundreds if not thousands of uses will appear.
Again, the whole state of mass-produced for the general population solar technology is barely crawling, not even walking. It will be and it'll eventually put dirty energy out of business.
BTW....they're finally coming to turn my system on at 1000 tomorrow (Thursday).

Thanks Ging. I still have to pay the $230 for my reverse meter so the power company in town can track when I'm putting juice back on the grid...thus...crediting my account. Pisses me off I have to pay them to monitor energy I'm giving to them to re-sell, but such is life.
I'm estimating about $110/monthly savings at current rates. Payback is then $9800/110 = 7.25 year paypack, then it's all free. However, energy rates rise every year...and when the do, my payback decreases by that very same %. When it's all said and done, I estimate I'll only have at a 5-5.5 year payback.

Well, I'll probably have to hold off on going SOlar as the local energy Co is trying to pass massive rate increases to deal with the EPA and other regulations. One of which is a $50 flat fee per month for Solar users. Same goes for those who have LED lights, and energy efficient appliances/good insulation and are considered "low usage" customers. So instead of a 12 year break even for most consumers, it will be 20+ years. Thanks Westar, you cock goblins.

So you're financially penalized for using energy efficient products? I'm telling you that state is fucked up. Move back to the real Midwest. Minnesota. Your son can wrestle moose and bear.

Pics of Chucks crib with solar then I'll buy. His house has finest of everything and he's Mr Green. Apparently those new fangled panels don't toss enough BTU's. I'm out.
