From the Gavinator. It's amazing that this city can still function. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/13/MNR110L13S.DTLRather than tossing loose change into a panhandler's empty cup, San Francisco officials want you instead to slide your spare quarters and nickels into a homeless meter.
The city's latest attempt to deal with one of its most vexing problems will be announced in coming weeks in the form of 10 old parking meters installed in some of the most heavily panhandled areas, The Chronicle has learned.

Another case of a retard not reading the article he posted:
A handful of cities around the country, including Denver and Baltimore, have installed homeless meters in recent years. And while the programs haven't necessarily been lucrative, some cities have seen less panhandling as a result.

And while the programs haven't necessarily been lucrative, some cities have seen less panhandling as a result.Maybe you can find the actual numbers that indicate the meters are a success. Nashville and Seattle, among others, dropped them. Denver reports a 92% reduction of panhandling after the meters were installed although they conveniently fail to mention that the city spent 65 million on the homeless problem and beefed up police presence, among many other measures, at the same time(yeah, it's the meters). Here's something funny that's related: blogtown.portlandmercury.com/2007/03/homeless_parking_meters.phpIf I were begging, I’m pretty sure that would piss me off. However, could such a device ever compete in Portland, especially with the guy on Burnside whose sign says, “need money to buy fuel for my space rocket?”
Nice try, Denver. But you lose!
UPDATE: Scott tells me the Portland Business Alliance has a similar program, called “Real Change, Not Spare Change:”
So, what should you do?
* Politely say, “no.” It’s the simplest thing you can do. * Give money to agencies serving the homeless. * Offer them a “REAL CHANGE, NOT SPARE CHANGE” voucher. 25 cent vouchers are redeemable for food, public transportation, shelter and other necessities, and have no cash value. * If panhandlers are being aggressive or intimidating, call Downtown Clean & Safe at 503.224.7383.
If I was homeless, and begging, and you offered me a “REAL CHANGE, NOT SPARE CHANGE” voucher, I’d be inclined to do something, like punch you in the fucking face, that might get me arrested. But there you go…

I never said they worked. In fact, it seems like a pretty stupid idea. However, the entire premise of your post was that the idiot Gavin Newsome came up with a stupid idea.

mrhawk, It's OK to admit you have no argument... and must resort to flinging poo to try and make something stick.
Do you have any alternate ideas? Or are we to guess your argument is- that Mayor Gavin is an idiot that is using this approach as his first & only attempt at dealing with the homeless problem... Or are you advocating the much more "liberal" approach taken in Denver - which you state actually worked?

The entire premise of my post was that The Gavinator implemented a stupid idea, which we apparentely agree upon. It was his idea to try this in SF. You might be correct in your parsing had I said "another great original idea."

Hilarious. I think that The Vagina Friendly Mayor is on to something very American. If you can't solve a problem, ship it to someone/somewhere else. At least those buses would be used for something.

If I were to trust someone to bus a problem out of my city, Mayor Friendly McGine would not be the guy.
Mediocre track record.

I say get a bus, go around and offer the homeless a day long job of sorting trash at the local dump. We can collect the recycleables instead of burying them, they can keep anything cool they find, they earn a small paycheck and don't have to have tons of skills to perform this operation. If they stink at it, that's okay, it is still trash. Better yet, set up a tent city by the trash dump for them. Yeah, they get a free shelter and a job and we can get them out of the city. We can even get them the shots and set up a small medical clinic that they can use after earning a voucher of sorting trash for say a week. Last but not least, they get an address to set up a residence and really find a job. Course its a dream world, but hey, it could work.

I would say that most of the people who are homeless are homeless by choice, because they have horrible chemical dependancies. I have an uncle who is homeless, and he just lives outside in a camp with a bunch of his buddies, and they have their entire day planned out of collecting cans, where to score a free meal, etc. He has no interest in working, and he has no interest in getting help from my mother or her sisters.
