Not talking about the ones that the fat people ride at Walmart...I’m talking about the motorized Razor type scooters. Lime is a brand. Supposedly this company has bought a bunch of these scooters to try out in Rochester until November when the city council will decide if they can stay. The premise is that a person can rent one. They are charged per minute of driving and once you get to your destination you can leave it where you are and I guess someone comes around and finds them.
I had my first experience with being on the road with these scooters Thursday. I’m driving home from work through downtown waiting at a stoplight and it changed green and out of my left comes about 6 teenagers in a single line riding these diagonally through the intersection blocking my way. Two blocks later there was two girls on the sidewalk and one sped out into the street between me and a parked car and just stopped right there. A few blocks later I see some other young teen riding down a sidewalk on one ahead of me and as I’m even with her she runs down a driveway and into the street going the opposite way.
All of these events were rather disconcerting. Bicycles are a pain the ass but they are bigger. It’s very odd to see an upright person rolling down the street at 15 mph next to large vehicles. These kids seem to have poor control of them. They are not supposed to be on the sidewalks but in the street and are supposed to follow the traffic laws. I plan on avoiding the downtown area because frankly with pedestrians, it can be kind of dicey but they are slow. With these scooters going as fast as they can suddenly you’ll have some idiot going full speed and cutting you off. These riders are going to get killed by a
3,500 lb vehicle going the same speed.
End of get off my lawn rant.
