This will be the true legacy liability of the B00mers. We have an absolutely decrepit bridge near my office. The bridge is massive and literally goes nowhere, it basically preserves a dozen parking spots and traverses a few minor roads and one fairly busy road. There's no reason for it to exist except federal highway money back in the 1950's. It doesn't cross a valley or body of water and spans over an eighth of a mile. The situation is even more dire in the Midwest because the population has been basically flat or declining for decades in many rural areas and so the per capita cost of fixing these things is going to be astronomical. Japan is having even bigger infrastructure problems than the US due in part to population collapse. There's no one out in the rural areas to even work the train tracks and bridges anymore. The slow motion collapse of the industrialized West is far more disconcerting than I thought it would be 20 or 30 years ago.

I've already heard the excuses.
"It's cause Iowa has so many bridges, e.g., lots of small little dinkers that should be culverts. That's why there are so many "bad" ones."
Yeah right

The thoughts are the pile drivng of the new bridge supports probably caused the movement of the old brdge. It appears to have shifted about 6 inches at one location. They have plans to start stabilizing the old bridge. Anticipate at least 2 months closure, if it can be re-opened at all. They will probably have to embargo semis from the bridge. (Neighbor is the project engineer). Oh, and fuck you from all us b00mers.

Being paid for by federal funds. Thank you all. I know you all are very concerned about how this affects me.

We were headed south on the road that runs along the river and whoever was piloting a barge hit us with a spotlight from hell. Don’t know if he was checking out the truck or just being an asshole but the only thing I could was stop the truck and flip the pilot the bird.

LOL, they hit the spot on the bridge to make sure the are where they need to be. One million candle power spots I'm told. Just north of the bridge is the tightest turn on the river. We were tent camping on a sand bar one summer, they did seem to light up all the tents when they went through.
