With all of the bull shit the offense has been pulling I think it's time we give some props to the D. They are the guys who are keeping us in games and giving the offense the chances to score (which are pissed away 9 times out of 10). Even when they are gassed they are still one of the best in the country.
Anyone out there agree with me on this? The defense is what is keeping us from being 0-12.

I would more or less agree but the D' had their share of screw-ups on Saturday also. They gave up several big plays to Pitt. The run up the middle ones are what really pissed me off as that's supposed to be the strength of our D'. No excuse for that shit in the 1st damn quarter.

Any team that wants to gain 20 yards on Iowa needs to go empty-backfield w/ 5 wides and have the QB run up the middle.

The defense is about the only reason to watch the Hawks right now. It sucks because with an offense Iowa would be '02 unstoppable, but since the offense sucks so bad the defense is always on the field sucking air. But it doesn't seem to stop em.
Like you said, they will give Iowa every oppurtunity to win the game. We just got to put points on the board. This QB thing need to get figured out in a hurry because if we don't win 8 games this year with the good defense and outstanding running back/punter, then something is wrong.
Even in '05, Iowa didn't even have a running game and Drew Tate just slung it all over the field every game... it was the defense doing its thing that helped win 10 games including a huge bowl game. The defense is there... we just need Drew Tate... or even Drew Tate's mentally handicapped brother would be a step up.

We gave up too many big plays to Pitt. I hate when they get receivers wide open. That happened countless times against Pitt. It almost looked as though our DB's were confused.

how to beat Iowa 101: run the spread offense.

The spread offense didn't win the game for NW, it was the gifts the offense gave them. Kinda hard to overcome 5 turnovers (3 of which were self-inflicted). In all, the D played pretty good. A spread is supposed to put 40-50 points on the board, not 22.

the D couldn't get off the field in the 2nd half to save their life. rush 3/drop 8 doesn't work. It has never worked. the way to beat a spread team is to beat up the QB and that's impossible to do when you rush 3 guys.

I don't know if we were watching the same game or not but it looked to me like the D couldn't get off the field because the Iowa offense kept giving them the ball. If we had a rush 5/drop 6 like a lot of people want the score would have been worse. I'd gladly give up 5-7 yards per play rather than 15-20.

5-7 yards per play leads to 1st downs. every time iowa got pressure on Bacher he had to throw it away, thus a 0 yard gain. I know which one I'd rather have.
