That's not cool for the Des Moines area. I have a good friend who works in IT for Principal who has been worrying about this happening.

I work there and have been sick yesterday and am going in at 3 today, hopefully I'll still have a job. Pretty sure I will because they can't really lay off my position but you never know.
I had a pretty good feeling this was going to happen eventually. There is alot of money wasted on middle management there.

I have a couple friends who work there too, and as of now, they've survived the layoffs.

I had a phone interview with principle about 6 months ago, for the same position (or similar) as Karl Hungus. At the beginning of the interview, I told the phone interviewer that I had decided to stay where I was for several reasons.
I was worried I was making a poor decision at the time. This makes me not worry as much.
Karl, I wouldnt worry about it to much, even if they did have layoffs for your postion they wouldnt fire the whole team/department. From what you have said you are in the top 10% of people who do your job. So i think your safe.
If i was a Newhire on your team, (which would have been the case had i gotten hired) I would be shitting bricks rigth now.
Edit: at the time of the interview, i told the lady i would be interested after the first of the year in switching jobs, She said that "Principal is looking to really expand this team in the future months" so that I had a good chance. (doesnt sound like your job is in danger)

I'm really not worried about it at all. They are actually hiring for my position, which is basically customer service with some financial advising. It still sucks though, basically confirms I've hit a glass ceiling. I was actually the top performer on my team this last year now that Nick is gone and I really, really doubt my position is at risk at all. It will be interesting to see what the company says once I get there here in about an hour, I haven't been to work yet this week.

Thankfully the wife got spared. She has basically the same job as I do, I don't think she would have anything to worry about unless the company got bought out.

I go to work about an hour and a half earlier than she does. I read about the 500 job cuts on KCCI...so it was kind of an anxious hour and a half.

Back in the day (like last year) The Principal had some pretty epic expense accounts.
I love how these fucking companies, full of the alleged best and brightest, "plan" like the good times are permanent and that the business cycle magically won't happen this time.
Fucktards.

There is alot of money wasted on middle management there. We had the same problem here at WF, until shit hit the fan about a year ago. There was so much middle management people didn't know who the hell they reported to. Our division is a skeleton of what it once was, but at least I don't report to 6 different people like I used to.

When I was working at Hertz was when they had their IPO. The first thing the new CEO did was get rid of pretty much all of the middle management, who were literally doing nothing to help the company's bottom line. The only bad thing was these overpaid, pointless jobs were a pretty big selling point when I was offered the job. That place blew and I am very glad I decided to get out when I did.

I don't work at the big P, but did for about 4 1/2 years in the late 90's.
Had a friend at work send me an email Monday (he still has contacts there), that said there were rumored to be layoffs today (tuesday). I didn't say anything in case it was just a rumor.
I haven't had a chance to check with some friends that work there, but would you guys know which areas were hit hardest. Have some people I know in the investments and 401k consulting/contact areas.
ps - glad to hear you guys on the board were spared. It would SUCK going into Christmas jobless.
pss - When I was at Principal, our department had more managers then people to manage. My actual manager only had me as their sole direct report at the time. There were some managers in our area that had the title only with zero direct reports. I felt there was so much management that it was going to be hard to move up b/c they were already loaded at it.

cmonhox,
I talked to my good friend last night that works there he said the cuts were pretty much across the board, he said it was pretty spread around and wasn't all newbies.

You know why middle management gets so bloated (and in retrospect expendable?)
Because of pay bands tied to promotions and job titles. It's a systemic curse. You corporate guys know exactly what I'm talking about.
Middle Management is a baaaad place to be in a shit economy.
