I think this could be an interesting topic to discuss, well, just because I'm bored. I just started reading a book called "Methland" by Nick Reding. It covers how the small towns around the country are being taken over by Methamphetamine. Speaking from experience, as I was a Reserve Deputy in Chariton for 4 years, I know first hand that this is certainly the case. I have seen meth destroy the lives of many people I know, some I even cared about very much. In the link below, the article talks about Roland Jarvis out of Oelwein, IA, and how he burned his grandmothers house down in a fit of paranoia one night. Read the third paragraph in the link. It seriously does not even come close to the description Roland gives to Nick for the book. I was mortified when I read that part of the book. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/12/AR2009061201403.htmlI guess I'm just asking you all what your take is on the Meth problem in not only small town Iowa, but all over the country. And if you get a chance, check out the book. Its a very good read.

I do my part to try and keep the meth problem down by profiling and not selling pseudophedrine to those that look like they might be wanting to cook up a batch. We tell people we only have 4-6 hour tablets when they are always wanting the 24 or 12 hour formulas. Also we refuse to sell syringes to people unless they have an Rx or they fill for insulin at our pharmacy. We can legally sell all of these things, our manager just chooses not to. We would rather users share needles and let darwin sort them out than keep them disease free.

Meth is crazy down here in rural Georgia, too. And when I was in Austin, TX a couple of years ago for SxSW, my wife needed something for her allergies/congestion and they had everything locked up because of the meth cooks cleaning everybody out for their supplies.

In regard to rural Iowa, the legalization of marijuana could really add to the economic slump most small Iowa communities face. If people could begin to harvest hemp or pot, there is potential for an agricultural stimulus for these same communities that are being negatively affected by meth.

I dunno. It's kinda fun going to the bars in Mtown and pointing/laughing at the people with no teeth.

Nope. Maybe high on Bud Light. That's about it for me.
