Okay... time for a relatively "PG" rated thread topic. Anyone involved in martial arts? I'm involved in tae kwon do (along with my stepson). Hope to get my blackbelt sometime this fall. It started out simply as a way to get/stay in shape and just kind of escalated from there. What sort of martial arts are people of the Wasteland involved in? What's your rank? Do you do any tournaments? I did a tourney this weekend and basically learned that I let myself get out of shape over the winter. Dammit.

When I was in California I took Krav Maga for 2 1/2 yrs. Fun but vicious.
I kept bringing up wrestling moves to the instructors - some of them worked for the intended purpose, others I got my ass whooped.
I too started it to get my fat ass in shape (didn't work). I quit because I thought the likelihood of a 6'3" 300+ lb guy needing to learn more about harming someone was, well, overkill. But I learned some cool stuff. --- and will enroll my kids when they're old enough.

Awesome!
All I know about Krav Maga is from what I saw on Fight Quest. Looks pretty brutal, but also very "pure" and no nonsense... if that makes any sense.
Yeah, I don't expect to ever have to use anything in a real-world situation. But, it's nice to know that you have those skills.
It's also fun to pratice beating the hell out of each other in class. Great stress reliever!

I still look back to wrestling in Jr. High (and forward) as the hardest thing ever & the most intense almost martial art. My first coach during my first year out (7th grade) was Dan Glenn who was going through dental school - after getting 3rd and 2nd at the nationals under Gable.
Every year after that, we would have one or more of the (then) current Iowa wrestlers come use us as live bait / extra practice. No matter how much I outweighed them, those dudes were brutal.

I thought about wrestling a few times when I was in school, but I was trying to put weight ON and didn't really want to take it off by starving myself.

I was involved with tae kwon do up until about my freshman year of high school. For some reason I can't remember, I quit. I had worked myself up to a blue belt. I would like to take it up again some time in the future... I'm sure I'd have to start from scratch, as I don't remember hardly anything.

I was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do at one time. My master instructor was Woo Jin Jung in Cedar Rapids. We did a little full contact stuff in the late 80's when it was an exhibition event in the Olympics, but I was really into breaking. My biggest accomplishment was three pieces of concrete with a punch (bare knuckles).
I haven't trained in about 16 years and my hips are so bad that I can barely kick above my waist now.

I took karate for a year at NIACC. Got to blue belt. All I really learned is that I am the most unflexible sonofabitch in Iowa. Had fun though. One time we were practicing front kicks were you jump up and kick the pad in front of you. I somehow forgot to put my foot down and to land and I ended up on my back. Knocked the wind out of me and couldn't breath for a full minute.

Only THREE pieces of concrete? Pussy. ;D J/K And Bluz? You are still a black belt.
