Jesus Christ guys, my brother bought a place in the Green Point neighborhood in Brooklyn. It was pretty nice until we went to get some grub. There were seriously 10,000 "hipsters" in a 10 block radius. I can't even describe these weirdos other than to say that it looks to me like the hippies have likely cut their hair and are in the process of trying to blend into society.
My brother insists that the neighborhood is up and coming and that the hipsters, none of whom have actual jobs, will soon get pushed out of the neighborhood. I sure as shit hope so because if they don't, my brother pissed away a colossal amount of money on his new place.

Dude, that's just how it works. Hipsters squat in crappy buildings and live life just like they were in the musical"Rent." (yes I saw it on a date once -next to Cats, it was the worst thing ever) Sometimes they make art or open a gallery. Next people who can afford the building buy it and fix it up. Then the hipsters get priced out of the neighborhood and leave. They do leave behnd some coolness that keeps housing values up. See Lincoln Park in the 80's

I from southeast Iowa, just recently got back from a trip through Missouri and have been all over this country. I have seen some messed up people in my day and a hipster is about the least intimidating or worrisome.

Your brother must have moved to a REALLY crappy place... if everyone around it doesn't have a job.

I am happy that I am the coolest person in my neighborhood. My next door neighbor is younger than me, but he is one of those d nozzles that wears a hat all day, and he has a truck with a Harley decal on the back, but no Harley.

Well, socal, none of them have actual jobs. Their "jobs" are things like "artist" or "art critic," etc. His place is brand new and is very nice, but it will take some tearing down and rebuilding to bring the neighborhood up to snuff. It won't be long though and the hipsters will get priced out.

It won't be long though and the hipsters will get priced out. They seem to be able to afford the same "rent" as your brother. Perhaps selling "art" to conservative fools is a lucrative business. Look at this couple & tell me they aren't hipsters... with artwork:

No, they aren't paying anywhere near the same "rent" as my brother. New York City's big government liberals devised the most sinister, anti-development law in the history of mankind known as rent control. Hipsters go into a neighborhood and get rent control which restricts the amount by which prices can increase every year. Landlords say eff this, and let the places that are on rent control get dilapidated because upkeep costs more than they are earning in rent. Then, when it gets condemned, they tear it down and turn the land into million dollar condos that the hipsters can't afford. My brothers condo is very nice, the squalor in which the hipsters live is not. Within 5 or 10 years, all the hipster dives will be gone and the hipsters will be forced further out where the cycle will begin anew, while my brother's place doubles in value. I have a bad feeling that if the dollar stays weak, his neighborhood could become infested with Eurotrash, which would be even worse than the hipsters.

That's what I don't get...
For all the bitching you do about your city (and the city of your brother), you still live there ---- and HE PURPOSELY JUST BOUGHT A PLACE THERE...
Those have been major US cities for quite some time now. For those that chided Obama's pastor for his words, you are saying very much the same thing.
Perhaps things aren't as good in the US since 1/20/01 as some espouse --- because the bitching and moaning seems to have increased a lot more since then.
Grow a set or friggin move.

Race = immutable Hipster = choice BTR = Wright WTF??? The hipsters will move on. Chciago is a great city, but under decades of Democratic leadership, the government is a festering cesspool of corruption. I live here and am active in Republican politics in town as I want to give honest Americans a voice. Sorry if I don't wave the liberal white flag of surrender quickly enough for your liking.

Don't the Republicans in Illinois commit just as many crimes as the dems?
