Doing a little research to see what people think. And no, I don't want any snarky answers about how you can't compare different positions or across eras. Just tell me who you'd back if you were arguing with your buddies in a bar.
For my money, I'd take Joe Montana.

I'll go with LaDainian Tomlinson. He can run, catch, and throw. For all we know he could boot a 50 yard FG too.

This is a tough one...Barry Sanders (the whole reason I've been a cursed Lion fan). It's tough because he was the most EXCITING player, but one could probably argue against being the best.

There are a lot worthy of consideration. There was a fella by the name of EB Halsey who I saw a few years back who was the best damn football player I'd ever seen at tailback in person.
However, if I had to pick just one, at any position, I'd be hard pressed not to pick Lawrence Taylor. The guy murderized offenses and when you look at Jake Long as the number 1 overall pick and the highest paid O-lineman in the league, you can see how LT revolutionized the game of football - every defense wants LT clones at ROLB or RE and every offense wants the most powerful, agile, smart 300lb plus guy they can find in hopes of neutralizing the threat that LT clones create for 60+ plays a game. A helluva lot of ball games are won and lost over on the left side of the o-line thanks to the LT revolution.
LT could pass cover, blitz and stop the run. He had to be accounted for every single play.
Montana, Elway and Sanders are all other fine choices.

LT would probably be Joe Theisman's pick as well...

BOB Sanders's career isn't over yet, so he may have a say in this discussion...
Just saying...

Ditto. Left game in his prime to make movies. Would star in today's game. Man among boys in the 50s and 60s...bigger, faster and hit harder than most LBs.

1. Ronaldo 2. Bobby Bouchier 3. Ditka
Actually if I had to pick one, I'd say Ditka. If Ditka were to play a game against all the other names mentioned the score would be Other guys: 0, Ditka: 38

Ronnie Lott; Howie Long; Dick Butkus; Lawrence Taylor all in a tie for first for me.
The film of Jim Brown looks great, but its all highlights. I've also met him five times, but I just can't list him up there without seeing him play several games.

I think it is tough to leave LaDamian Tomlinson out of the discussion. He is probably more versatile than any other RB we have seen. He can hurt you from anywhere on the field by way of the run, catch or pass. I would not be surprised to see him take over the kicking duties if Kaedo was to go down.

How many yards would Barry Sanders have ended up with behind the Dallas O-line, a solid QB, and some pretty solid WR helping to take some of the focus of the D?
I'm thinking he would have had EA Sports Madden numbers.
