My bro called a few minutes ago to tell me he finally got announced as the new head of his dept. He just turned 35 and is now just separated from the CEO by one layer of management and has over 100 peeps in his dept. He found out a few weeks ago that he got the promotion, but today was the big announcement.
He started at the company almost 10 years ago when their US operations had fewer than 40 employees and now they are over 750. He worked for this total assbag named Dennis. My brother is not generally "out" at work because the people in his field are assholes and he knows that if his clients find out he is gay, his biz could be toast.
He did come out to the office 7 years ago, though after he got sick of fielding questions about kids, marriage, a house, etc., but he made it very clear that his clients shouldn't be told that he's gay. Anyway, as soon as he came out, this assbag Dennis started harassing the shit out of him and treating him like total shit.
Two years ago, my brother reached the same level in the company as Dennis. Dennis still gave him shit and treated him like shit. Last week, Dennis was on a biz trip and called my bro barking out orders of what he needed done, still treating my bro like a subordinate.
My bro began his career at AIG. His favorite story from AIG lore is about how Hank Greenberg finnagled his way to running a department when he was fairly young and his first order of business was to fire everyone and make them re-interview for their jobs. My bro ain't that ruthless, but Dennis has been told to wear his nicest suit tomorrow because he's got an interview at 9AM. Dennis has had all access to the computer system shut down so he can't access my bro's contact list and spread malicious rumors.
My bro is leaning towards keeping him, but he's going to need a lot of ass kissing and promises about increased business development to do so. Moral of the story, if you work in a big company, don't be an asshat to your subordinates. Your future might be in their hands someday. The fact that my bro's almost 20 years younger than all of his direct reports didn't sit well, but that's what they get for being lazy mouthbreathers who only work 9-5 and piss and moan every time they have to travel somewhere or do something outside of their normal job.
