So about three years ago my partner at work told my boss in the next one to three years he planned on retiring. He’s slightly younger than me. His kids are grown and on their own and he’s saved a lot. I also think he wants to retire early because in his family the males usually die in their 50’s. He’s almost 60. As some of you may or may not recall, my job is in healthcare informatics for radiology. He is the one with an IT background and I am the one with the clinical background. He manages the server reboots, building radiologist workstations, setting up printers and working with IT to resolve issues. Of course that is all very important but that not something that takes all day. The server reboots happen once a month. He also trouble shoots any IT related application issues. He manages over 100 severs for the applications we run. No one in the IT department manages that many.
I deal with more software related things with the application. So with the radiology information system I manage and maintain everything that goes with that…billing, exam set up, and scheduling templates. I also manage set up in the PACS which is the system that manages images, train physicians to use it, trouble shoot problems for the radiologists, and other users and fix imaging fuck ups the techs cause. I manage the dedicated voice recognition for the radiologist as well, creating templates for them and troubleshooting issues. And for all the systems I manage the interfaces between RIS, PACS the voice rec, and those to the epic EMR. My partner does a little troubleshooting in the RIS and PACS and we share call. If either of us comes across something we can’t handle we call each other. There’s a lot more I do but that’s enough.
In a couple of months we will be starting the build for the epic product that will replace our RIS. They’ve hired two dedicated people to manage that and are training at least 4 others to work in it to which is hilarious because currently it’s mostly me and my partner doing it with the system we have now. We’ve been practically begging my boss for additional help since about 2013 and we’ve always gotten “we’ll put it in the budget for next year” response. Even though I chose not to go work for clinical informatics with epic I will be heavily involved with the project for the transfer of data and workflows and testing. After it’s live I will just be dealing with the PACS and the Voice rec system. So my life should be better, right?
My partner told my boss at the end of May 2022 that he would be retiring the first of this year 2023. My boss didn’t place an official add for the job until late October early November. We didn’t get many responses and a few wanted no part of it because it wasn’t completely remote. We had a promising candidate from California but she wasn’t willing to take a $20 per hour paycut.
Now we are down to two candidates. One is a woman from Illinois. We had a virtual interview. She seemed to say all the right things. She has a background similar to mine. Lots of experience with some of the same applications we have according to her resume. I am guessing she’s not currently working. She mentioned that there had been a great upheaval in where she works and many people were let go as they were going a “different direction”. It’s not the direction she wants to go. Her resume says she’ll move anywhere. Her current (or former) employer has a job posting similar to ours. She really has no server type experience like me but I feel we both can be trained for that. Apparently we’ve only gotten one response on the reference request and attempts to contact that person with a call have been unsuccessful. I think that’s weird. Don’t most places require multiple references?
The other candidate is a kid. 22 years old. He’s a nice kid. He works here in workstation support. So he helps users with their PC. No other IT experience except that he’s very interested in learning. He’s worked here a year and before that at Home Depot. No clinical experience. The IT department says he’s a hard worker. And nice.
So do we hire the mystery woman with one reference with lots of experience (not necessarily IT or system’s experience) knowing she has to make an interstate move or go with the young kid with no experience, is here and just train him.
My partner is now going to work part time for the next year due to issues with accessing retirement funds or health insurance or something but he told my boss he was going to set his own hours and no one was to call him or request anything of him for issues. I said to my boss what kind of BS is that? They’ve come up with an agreement to have set hours. He always worked 7-3:30. Never more than 8. While I’m always behind and working 9-12 hours. We are salaried.
I suppose the real question is which lotto game has the best chances of winning?
