So, we had a maintenance plan that ran out on June 29th. We had the car scheduled to go in on June 30th to get an oil change and check out a slow leak on a tire. We were informed when we took the car in that our maintenance plan did not go though the month of June but ended on June 29th. It was bullshit, but I didn't argue as I could have read the contract better. We get the repairs done and pay our bill.
2 weeks later a pump goes out in the car. 1 week later the latch to the back hatch breaks.
At this point, I am thinking this may be more than a coincedence. Maintenance plan expires and random things go wrong and are covered. I haven't had them fix the latch yet, because the other repairs have cost me close to $1000. Does anyone on the board believe it is appropriate for me to ask the business to fix the latch for free? Given the bullshit that has transpired with the car in the last 3 weeks, I am questioning the quality of the vehicle.

Sounds to me like you're probably fucked but it wouldn't hurt to see if the dealership (assuming this is where you get it serviced) would be willing to work something out with you. There's a pretty good chance they want to retain your buisness and being assholish about problems that happened immediately after the maintenance plan expires would pretty much insure you won't be a returning customer.

Did you have it in recently before the expiration of the plan when they should have been able to diagnose either of those things (particularly the pump?)
How many miles are on the car? Water pumps (I assume this is what you had to replace) can go out fairly easily after 100K miles in my experience.
Could just be a matter of shitty timing.

80K for mileage. I am going to ask for the latch to be free. Bought the car in '07 and negotiated free maintenance with the dealership through June 2010 (June 29th obviously). The Check Engine light came on 1 week after the car was in getting serviced. That issue became the emissions pump which needed to be replaced.
I will definitely go down the "I'll never come back here again, if....." route as I do believe that works. Just disappointed that all of this shit is going down at once when I actually need a reliable vehicle to get me back and forth from IC over the next 6 weeks.

It wouldn't hurt to ask for the shit for free and I am in a similar deal.
We got the extend warranty on my truck 5 year or 100,000K well low and behold forgot that the 5 years was up a couple of months ago and the check engine light has been coming on for a day or two and then go off for a few weeks or so and then come back on and so on.
I need to take it and am sure there is something wrong with it that needs to be fixed but I also blame myself for not making sure I scheduled a service check up before the warranty ran out.

First of all, sorry to hear about having to deal with this shit...automobile issues are fucking frustrating.
Secondly, please let me know the dealership is either way (after you deal with them). That way we all know who to avoid, and also you can make good on letting them know that you'll never shop there and tell everyone about their shitty service. OR we'll all know of a dealership that are willing to work with their customer's even if they aren't fully obligated.

You might have an out here...
Was the vehicle in for service (say, a day/week or more) during the duration of the contract? If so, insurance laws in many states require that the contract be extended by the duration the product (vehicle) was in for repairs.
A complaint call to the State Department of Insurance and/or the BBB will likely get your problem solved instantly. ---When you call in though, make sure you have all related paperwork. They are more likely to help someone that sounds like they have their act together, than they are someone that just wants to be a dick.

Thanks for the advice SoCal. I will review my paperwork and possibly file a compliant with BBB if my ducks are in a row.
I have decided to get the latch fixed at a different place. The BMW dealership on Hickman wouldn't fix it for free and didn't even have a loaner car for me to take to IC. I asked the guy "Would you be comfortable driving your kid to Iowa City in a car that has a back hatch that doesn't latch?" He didn't answer. Not giving them anymore money. On a human level, obviously I'm having a shit luck the past 3 weeks with this vehicle....so you would think a business could throw me a bone.....but no. Fuck 'em. I am going with a local business on Crocker Street.

I was looking at Bimmers last year but I didn't want the trouble of dealing with those fuckers. You'd think a dealer with a high-end customer base would go out of their way for their customers, but those assholes just seem to treat people with contempt. Are you taking your vehicle to Beckley? They aren't cheap but they know their shit. Certainly better to deal with than the BMW dealership in DM.

Is that part of European Motors?

Yes, part of European Motors and Yes, taking to Beckley. Beckley will end up being $30 more expensive.
We didn't have any issues with BMW Des Moines when the car was covered under the maintenance plan for the last 3 years. We would take it, they would fix whatever or do the scheduled service and things were good. Now that there is no maintenance plan they are seeing dollar signs.
On a side note, I've been in an anti-business mood lately. I called Bank of America and asked them to give me a bailout on my credit card balance. Unfortunately, since I pay something on my bill every month I don't qualify. I have to be a delinquent before they negotiate a taxable debt forgiveness package.

European sucks to deal with. I worked with a company that purchased 4-5 very high end cars from them, and their follow up service was ridiculous.

They aren't cheap but they know their shit. Certainly better to deal with than the BMW dealership in DM. I would just like to add that there is a certain Honda dealership in the DM that will not be getting my business due to their shitty service and rates. Story 1: made an appointment for an oil change. It was a Saturday, so I knew they would be busy. Still, 70 minutes after I give them my car keys, I still had not heard anything on what was taking so long. I ask around and find out that they totally fucking forgot to get my car in! They just had it sitting parked off to the side and left me waiting around. They finally got it done and it only took them about 20 minutes after I asked "WTF?" but still.... Story 2: had a tire that was wearing un-evenly and starting to wobble a bit. I had gotten my new tires at this place about maybe 5 months prior. I ask them about it and they tell me they can put a new one on, but it will cost me $120. I ask them a) why the tire was wearing un-evenly when they supposedly balanced it and b) why they would try to charge me for a brand new fucking tire. They gave me some song-and-dance about how it was a bitch to properly balance Honda tires but that since they show that they DID balance them when they put them on, they can't say that they did anything incorrect and I would therefore have to pay the full $120 for a new fucking tire. I ended up going to a local tire shop and got a new tire PROPERLY balanced and installed for $83. The guy even told me that some fucktard obviously did not know how to balance that tire. The moral of this story is that there are at least a few dealerships that will fuck you any chance they get.

I've heard this story too! That slut must get around! I just think a lot of young girls learn the hard way to shut their eyes when its time to blow I knew a chick in college who would always "accidentally" catch a full load on the side of her face when giving a blowjob. She said she didn't like to swallow but could never pull away soon enough. I think the chick should have just admitted she likes taking it on her face. Like some guy was gonna disapprove?

I just think a lot of young girls learn the hard way to shut their eyes when its time to blow I knew a chick in college who would always "accidentally" catch a full load on the side of her face when giving a blowjob. She said she didn't like to swallow but could never pull away soon enough. I think the chick should have just admitted she likes taking it on her face. Like some guy was gonna disapprove? OK, quick story before I get back to my car: When I was in college I was working at a restaurant in CR and one of the managers had the hots for me. She a solid 8.5/9 body wise and maybe a 6.5/7 of a face. Anyway I knew that she wanted it and just never did anything about it, until one night I was bored so I called her up went over to her apartment. We messed around she was taking care of business (quite well I might add) it's that time and I do my best Peter North impression and she stops just in time to get a 5 roper in her hair. She asked why I didn't giver her a courtesy tap and I told her I didn't think she needed one. She laughed it off and it was pretty funny watching her try to get it out of her hair. I messed around with her a couple more times including her giving me the business in the living room of this couple's apartment that we partied with the night before, when we could hear that they were awake upstairs and finished about 30 seconds before they came downstairs. To this day I wish I would have kept things going for a few more weeks/months- she was a freak and know that she would have been up for bringing in one of her friends. Back on topic- Just dropped $500 at the Nissan dealership in IC. The wifes' car needed an oil change and was having trouble turning over. I thought it was funny when the guy told me what was wrong and what it would cost after I agreed to pay it he kept trying to add other things that "needed to be fixed" when I asked him in more detail about those things he said "you can probably wait until your next oil change to get that done." So which is it asshole? Does it need to be fixed or can I wait another 3-5 thousand miles before getting it done? Sorry but something that can wait another 5K miles doesn't "need to be fixed" Fuckers!
