O'Kweefe does a great job of getting the play in when you turn the play clock off.
Norm has a bunch of blitzes that he is willing to call when the game doesn't matter.
The passing game may struggle, but with the stellar stable of running backs we have coming back due to the staff's foresight that Sims and Young would both graduate last year, we'll be fine.
7 wins or less for the 4th straight year.

They didn't foresee losing Bailey (Kalvin not Champ), Robertson, Greene, and Pugh. I know Greene will be back this fall, but one of these guys should have the experience to step in with the other two graduating.....if they all hadn't left. I'm impressed they went the JuCo route to get Guillory (sp?) when they knew they were going to be in need.....he's a Fred Russell type of back with great quicks. Maybe it's the Lester Erb jinx??

In the "pre-game" on the radio, Rob Brooks said the game plan is going to be to run the ball 30-35 times per game. I wonder if he is counting sacks in that total because we sure as hell (minus the Michigan State game) didn't hand the ball off that often last year.

Damn it I'm not sure I can take another year of Jake Madness even with the ineptitude of the rest of the offense. (Sorry Jon Miller) That shouldn't be an excuse this year. How did Stanzi look? I hope this kid gets a shot this fall.

I hope this kid gets a shot this fall. I watched on the BTN streaming video link and I thought Stanzi looked pretty decent, actually. Jake looked awful at first, and then he made a few really good passes. That seems to be par for the course for him, flashes of talent and horrible inconsistency. It's really hard to evaluate, given the fact that the defense is usually ahead of the offense until the 3rd game of the year. So, should we be excited when our #1 defense shuts down our #1 offense? It's enough to make one crazy! I'm actually most worried about our ability to run the ball. If we can run with some consistency, I think our defense will be pretty darn good. btw--Ralph is a definite doomsdayer. I have yet to hear him speak well of any hawkeye coach. Lickliter has had his one year free pass from him, but everyone else has been "the worst coach ever" according to Ralph. Actually, his method is to say that the coach is "the best thing ever." He applies this to pretty much every coach, so there's your caveat regarding his sporting expertise. Personally, I think he just likes to feel bad and then be surprised when they do well. My opinion is that this is a MUST have year. They have some new guys on defense, but they also have some really good athletes. There are some definite question marks, but perhaps some "nobody" like Shonn Greene will come in and make a difference. It's important to remember that a first string O against a first string D looks pretty ugly this time of year, particularly if the Defense is pretty good. Just my opinion, and a ray of hope compared to Ralph's "I would rather cheer for another team" antics. 8 or 9 wins. cheers.

stanzi looked like the only one fit to play QB at the D1 level today. Guillroy (sp) was a nice surprise. Oline looked horrible......again. If Jake is allowed to start, Iowa finishes 100th or below in offense for the 3rd time in 5 years and 90th or below for the 4th time in 6 years. I'm sorry but KOK needs to go.

Dudes - Shonne Greene has likely been maxin' and relaxin' bince he left the team. After a guy misses that much time, there is not a presumption that he will be the shit. Maybe he will be, maybe he won't. Has anyone ever heard of Ricky Williams? Didn't he suck the 6th time he came back? I think he'll be fine, but he's gonna need some time. And I don't want to come on here and read Racerhawk christening him the next Heisman winner after he puts up 200 yards against Florida Bumblefuck and Maine.
The D will be just fine, until we play powerhouses like Western who can figure out Norm's bend but don't break strategy, but in terms of talent, it looks like we'll have one of our best d's bince the glory days of '03 and '04. I was also impressed by the fact that KOK had ZERO delay of game penalties. I predict that the O will be in the top 10 in the country, but if it is not, I would like to begin the "Jake is still young, he's only been in the program 4 years" campaign right now.
Earl, thanks for the reassurance on the tailback position. I was under the impression that WR was the only position where we had a bunch of departure issues. What the hell is the Cambus up to nowadays?
And racherhawk, suck my balls. You are the one cheering for France while draped in a white flag. Bince barber doesn't live here anymore, you're my ride to the damn games and I have a feeling we'll end up at Merkle's for at least one official wasteland game watch, so you better get real used to the bitching.

Stanzi looked pretty good. Based on the six hand offs he accomplished last year, I was surprised that he could actually throw a ball. I'm glad I don't have to listen to Dolph on a regular basis. He gives the least amount of relevant information in the most amount of time. Was Pam Ward busy? I agree with Mr. O's post above.

I believe Albert Young's quote about Greene was that he really likes his TV. I think there is a reason he wasn't playing much when he was there the first time....besides the fumbles. I'm not expecting too much from him......hopefully I'm wrong.

I agree the offense isn't going to be very good again. However the one positive I can see in that is hopefully this would be the last spring game for KOK at the University of Iowa as his ass is gone after another terrible season. He is also the QB's coach and JC hasn't improved one bit bince he stepped foot on campus, that alone should show KF that his buddy doesn't have a clue in coaching an offense or QB's.

Please tell me that Jake the Messiah will still be the starting QB. This gives me hope that the Fighting Illini will have a chance to break his legs and win the game on November 1.

If I had a dollar for every time I said or thought KOK was gone "after this year" I'd be a rich m-effer. Dude is never going to get run. If neither '06 nor '07 got his ass run, nothing will. We will run the same damn offense with Jake at the helm, the defense will be pretty good and we'll get 8 wins if we're lucky, 6 if we don't get any lucky bounces. I can't wait until the season starts so we can watch Ken with his shit eating grin as he struggles to realize that he has to get a fucking play in on 3rd and 2. Then, we'll take the delay of game or burn a timeout and get effed in the a. Can anyone here imagine Ken playing chess? I bet he is terrible at it. He clearly does not understand that any activity involving strategy requires thinking a few moves ahead and adjusting those moves quickly if the opponent adjusts. I mean, you'd think on second and seven, he'd kind of know what to call on third and short, third and medium or third and long, but to his credit, coming out of 2nd and 7, he's probably expecting either 3rd and 7 or 3rd and 16 because his astute play calling often leads to no gain or big losses.

My analysis:
1.) $4 is little much for cold slices of pizza.
2.) The Hawkeyes generally looked bad in most areas. Defense looks to be our strength again, but I wonder just how strong it will be.
3.) I can still party in IC like it's 2003. Only now I'm older and the kids look up to me as a drunken beacon of wisdom. I'm still recovering from my hangover. I think we hit 5 house parties and 40 bars, somehow found myself being dropped off at the hotel just as the sun was rising. I even logged a pretty girl's phone number who happens to live near me. I'd say that was so much fun I should do it more often, but in the interest of saving brain cells and my liver, I have dismissed that notion. I'll be back for football in the fall.

KOK is also allegedly recruiting coordinator in the east. Yeah, he's landed some big guys from Penn in the past, but I think he's been a little cold the past few years. If Campbell were moved up to OC, I think he would have more leverage as a recruiter and bring his years of experience at Michigan to bear on recruiting. I look at what Locksley has done with Zook over at Illinois and it is painfully apparent that unless we significantly raise the bar in terms of recruiting, we could have some troubled years in our future. I just can't say that if I were a star recruit, I'd get that fired up about going to play for Ken or Norm. So I say, give Campbell the clipboard and the playbook, get him up in the booth and get O'Kweefe a job at Hills High School.

You may be right, but it's just sooo you to give the clipboard to the guy who has not proven himself at Iowa. He must be good because he came from Michigan, right? I also wonder what you'd say if we recruited a two star recruit from Pennsylvania. You'd probably blame O Kweefe. What if that two star recruit turned out to be an all-pro, as Bob Sanders did. You are absolutely a "glass is half empty" kind of guy, but that's the ralphieboy we know and love. P

Wow racerhawk, maybe if you didn't spend as much time worrying about whether or not the 4th Trombone fell in line when the band came on the field, you might know a thing or two about football.
I defer to the coaches when it comes to stars and all that crap. They know what they need and they were right on the money with Adam "the Glove" Shada. I just have a bad feeling that the guy who was really good at finding those diamonds in the rough on the defensive side of the ball is now coaching in the great cheese factory to the north that seems to eek out wins with a servicable offense and stout defense week in and week out. But under your theory, Ken was the one who went into the Sanders house and talked Bob out of OSU, Michigan and Penn State. He should win COTY for that recruiting coup.
A monkey with a rolodex could call plays at least as well as KOK, so I say let's mix it up and give somebody else a shot. I've seen what Ken can't do, and it is call plays. Hell, give me and barber two 18 packs of Coors Light bottles, access to the pisser and a headset and we'll take care of the playcalling.
