I often make 5 to 8 hours trips that terminate directly in the middle of nowhere. I am not about to make such a trip in any currently available EV. Depending on how far into the middle of nowhere, they may actually have decent speed chargers. Or at a hotel in that area may have slow chargers that you can use while you sleep and wake up to a full battery. They have kerosene lamps and wood burning stoves.

There are three major issues with EVs which must be solved for EV acceptance: Range Anxiety Recharge Time Recharge Infrastructure Again, oil will be gone sooner than we think. Most people are living in denial about this. It's not that far off. Even if you hate everything "green" with the fire of a million suns, that changes not the finite supply of oil. So something is going to have to replace the current ICE model. It's just fucking math. We could easily convert all liquid motor fuels to be derived from coal. That would extend ICE operation easily another 100 years. If we have not figured out fusion by then we are fucked.

So if I had an EV and needed to make a 600 mile trip, how many hours do I need to add for charging to the total trip time? It depends. Are you used to taking 8 hr driving stints? Will you be peeing/shitting into bottles/buckets? Will you be stopping to get food/drinks? Assuming you stop sometime, plan on an hour worth of charging at a fast charger. If you planned poorly and are stuck in BFE with low level chargers, a few additional hours. If you are already stopped at a high-level charge spot to- use the restroom/eat/drink/rest - wait time will be negligible. Good to know, in an 8 hour stint we usually stop 2-3 times. I'm guessing I would have to add an hour to the trip. Thanks.

Don't we require a shitload of coal to manufacture steel, not to mention the amount still burned for power? Batteries are no panacea either, what with the rare earth elements they require. Meanwhile the sun just sits out there doing fusion, mocking us. As do plants with their photosynthesis.

The just officially announced Rivian R2 and R3/X look very interesting new models that will bring competition and will likely be solid cars. Curious to see what the builds look like as they get closer to production.

I'm skeptical about the likelihood of petroleum-based fuels going away in the next century.....mostly cause of rampant greed and the control the greedy pieces of opportunistic shit have over the world....but also because WW3 is a lot closer than most people would care to admit.

I legit regret having kids. I love them to Pluto and back, but I fear for the fucking RIDICULOUS struggles they, hell even I, will have to face in coming decade(s). Our species sucks sofuckingmuch. Seriously though, a massive decrease in HUMAN population is the only real "fix"....painful to say, but there's too many of us, and we're too ripe to take mass advantage of.

Overpopulation is a much bigger problem than climate change.

It’s pretty much a race to the tape for some of us….. going around the 4th turn… we can’t quite see the tape, but we sure as hell sense that damn thing is not relatively far away

Damn I think the western world has already moved below the replacement rate. Its really the developing world that is used to needing to birth 14 kids to get one to survive to adulthood that is now having 7 of those 14 survive.

Bought an EV last week. It's an electric 2 wheel scooter. Little wider than a regular scooter. Has a bicycle type seat and a handy little basket. Tops out about 18.5 mph with a range of 25 miles max. 5-7 hours for full charge. Kind of fun and handy. I've read they are popular in the big cities. Only cost $550. I did see you can get one that will do 48 mph for a little over $2k. Might be a tad fast on 12-14" wheels.

Can it get to the top of Mt Hosmer? LOL. If someone 100 lbs. less than me is driving, yes. Might be down to 5mph if I try it. Still it's an EV.

Sounds like you need a charging station half way up.

Sounds like you need a charging station half way up. I have to take the car. Dog won't ride in the basket because he's a big boob. We go up there daily in the summer to walk. Still closed now for the winter.
